It’s true: from my first IU experience, I knew I had found my people. My wife says she knew IU would be our new home from a five-minute phone call after my residency interview. Lastly, I want to provide our residents with skills that will allow them to have careers in medicine without many of the stressors that lead to physician burnout. More importantly, I want to encourage an environment that places an emphasis on kindness and compassion for everyone despite their race, gender, or sexual orientation. I plan to use my interests in medical education, clinical reasoning, and evidence-based medicine to improve the already phenomenal patient care provided by our residents. Nevertheless, we do understand that it is not everyone's goal to be an academic hospitalist, so if you want to work in a private outpatient clinic or be a congenital heart specialist in Kenya, IU Med-Peds has every resource to help you reach your goals!Īs chief, I hope to help guide our residents as they continue to develop both personally and professionally. Our program also offers a Clinical Educator Training Pathway (CETP) for residents planning to pursue a career in academia. We are associated with the largest medical school in the country so there are many medical students on our teams, and our interns to play a large role in teaching them from day one.
It also doesn't take long to recognize how strongly education is emphasized at IU. In addition to making a great work environment, the large number of Med-Peds faculty makes finding mentorship for residents very easy. You won't have to spend much time at IU to realize that Med-Peds is everywhere! From the Riley ED to Eskenazi ICU and everywhere in between you will be working with Med-Peds faculty, fellows, and residents. For my personal career goals, I was looking for a program with a strong Med-Peds presence that placed an emphasis on medical education.
The residents were very close, and the program leadership was very receptive to couples matching and our desire to start a family during residency. Despite being the largest Med-Peds program in the country, the family-like atmosphere at IU was obvious to us during our interviews. When my wife and I were couples matching into Peds and Med-Peds, we wanted to find a large academic program that still maintained a close-knit, family feel. Most importantly though, it is where I met my wife! I attended the University of South Carolina School of Medicine - Greenville for medical school, which solidified my interest in Med-Peds and hospital medicine. Although I didn't realize it at the time, it was recognizing the challenges with the transition from pediatric to adult care, that first sparked my interest in Med-Peds. Go Tigers! After undergraduate, I worked for several years researching pediatric sickle cell disease. My undergraduate degree is from Clemson University. I was born in Indiana but grew up near Charleston, South Carolina. They serve as mentors and advocates for the residents and set a positive tone for the program. 15 Slam (2016) 6.Chief Residents provide leadership and support to residents in the combined Internal Medicine-Pediatrics Residency program.
